During these school holidays Reef HQ Aquarium will take the Great Barrier Reef directly to Yeppoon, Bundaberg, Rockhampton, Gladstone and Emerald with a live broadcast from 10.30am on Tuesday 10 July.
For an hour at venues across the region, you will be able to listen and chat directly with a diver from inside the world’s largest living coral reef aquarium — a first for the area.
The live screening is one of the many events being held across the regions this year to celebrate International Year of the Reef.
Director of Reef HQ Aquarium, Adrienne Power, said it was a great opportunity to get a taste of the Great Barrier Reef and all of its wonder.
“Our video conference will take people on a virtual dive into the coral reef and predator exhibits of Reef HQ Aquarium,” Ms Power said.
“A diver will be chatting from underwater in the aquarium and sharing facts about the Great Barrier Reef and its creatures.
“You’ll learn about the Reef ecosystem through the eyes of a diver and also hear about ways to protect the marine environment through every day environmental actions at home, work and school.
“Audience members can ask questions directly to the scuba diver and the presenter, and will be invited to pledge what they can do to benefit the Reef too.”
Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority Regional Engagement Assistant Director Rebecca Allen encouraged residents to attend these events.
“We’re very excited that our southern region communities will get to experience our national education centre Reef HQ Aquarium,” Ms Allen said.
“This is a fantastic opportunity to learn about the Reef and the things we can all do to benefit this amazing ecosystem.
“Across the holidays libraries and art galleries will feature Reef displays to help celebrate and share information about the Great Barrier Reef and some venues will hold craft activities and games focused on the Reef and actions that can be taken to protect it.”
This school holiday project is in partnership with councils in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority’s Reef Guardian program and the Fitzroy Basin Association.
