Zoning message working
Published: 13/04/2012
The message about zoning in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park appears to be understood, with most people doing the right thing over the traditionally busy Easter weekend.
Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) Acting General Manager Chris Briggs said there were patrols by vessel, aircraft and quad bikes throughout the Marine Park over the long weekend.
"Marine inspectors from the GBRMPA, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service and the Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol spoke with a number of park users and the vast majority were doing the right thing," Mr Briggs said.
"The feedback was that most people had an awareness of zoning requirements that allows them to enjoy the Marine Park responsibly."
Inspectors reported 10 incidents of recreational fishing in the Marine National Park (Green) zones, which are no take areas.
"There were some cases of people being in the wrong place or doing the wrong thing, but most people help protect the natural wonder they come to enjoy by doing the right thing," Mr Briggs said.
"People planning a visit to the Marine Park can make sure they help by picking up a free zoning map before they go."
