Boyne Island Primary School takes out top prize for Reef video

A team of six students from Boyne Island Primary School has been announced as the winner of a Great Barrier Reef video competition run by Gladstone’s Local Marine Advisory Committee (LMAC).

The competition challenged students to produce a two minute video: ‘from Road to Reef: where does your litter end up?’

Gladstone LMAC chair Scott Wilson said he was pleased with the number of schools eager to take part in this year’s competition.

"There were nine entries this year and they were all of a very high standard. Special mention goes to the ‘Green and Healthy Team’ at Boyne Island Primary School for their tremendous efforts in producing the winning video," Mr Wilson said.

"They used their own persuasive style, with video footage of themselves identifying where litter comes from, the damage it does and what everyone can do to eliminate it entering the Reef.

"They showed how marine debris can entangle wildlife and be ingested, leading to death or injury of animals.

"The aim of the competition is to raise awareness about the problem of marine debris and its effects on the environment, so we appreciate the work and creativity of students when they produce these videos.

"It’s also a practical and engaging way of promoting understanding of the need to eliminate litter entering the marine environment.

"There are opportunities for everyone to get involved in reducing marine debris — the first Great Barrier Reef clean-up will take place on the weekend of 24–25 October, with events scheduled in Gladstone."

The winning team of Year 3 students will receive a $500 voucher from the Gladstone LMAC, and will have their work displayed on YouTube and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority’s website and Facebook page.

Second prize went to a Year 4 Boyne Island Primary School student who won a $100 iTunes card. Third prize of a $60 iTunes card went to St John the Baptist Catholic Primary School (Group 5).

The video entries can be viewed on YouTube.
