Reef HQ Aquarium residents ready for their close-ups
Reef HQ Aquarium is inviting photography enthusiasts to enter its new Facebook photo competition by capturing its underwater residents in their best light.
The theme of the competition is ‘Reef HQ Residents’, with entrants invited to photograph any of the hundreds of animals, including corals, that call the aquarium home.
Reef HQ Aquarium aquarist Krystal Huff said the competition was a great opportunity to present another perspective on marine life.
"As a keen photographer myself, I’m excited about seeing the different ways other people look at these animals," she said.
"It’ll be really interesting to see the things other people notice that we may not. I’m sure the images that are submitted will give us a whole new appreciation of our residents.
"Just like the Great Barrier Reef itself, we have plenty of diversity on show, so there won’t be any shortage of interesting, photogenic and colourful marine life for someone to capture through their lens."
Reef HQ Aquarium director Fred Nucifora said conducting the competition via social media allowed people to share their images with others who may not have access to the Reef or the aquarium.
"The Great Barrier Reef is home to millions of amazing images that invoke deep feelings within people that see and make a connection with them," he said.
"The photography competition is about encouraging visitors to come and make their own personal connection with these animals that call Reef HQ home and to share their images with the global community via our Facebook page.
"This is how social media can help us to build stronger relationships with our friends and fans, while building appreciation of the Great Barrier Reef."
The competition will have four winners, including one chosen by popular choice through Facebook.
Competition winners will receive a stunning canvas photographic art print from Triggerfish Images, valued at $300 each. Ten runners-up will also receive Reef HQ Aquarium gift packs.
Winners’ photos will also be showcased for 30 days as the profile pictures on the aquarium’s Facebook page.
Photographers may enter two images by posting them to the aquarium’s Facebook wall with the title ‘Reef HQ Aquarium photo competition entry’. Entrants should check terms of conditions and entry to ensure their eligibility.
The competition closes at 5pm on Sunday 30 June. Winners will be announced on 12 July.
