Local council celebrates commitment to protect the Great Barrier Reef

Livingstone Shire Council today showed its commitment to protecting the Great Barrier Reef by partnering with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) to officially become a Reef Guardian Council.

GBRMPA Chairman Russell Reichelt said the participants in the Reef Guardian Council program led the way in environmentally sustainable practices that had real benefits for their local communities and the Reef.

"Reef Guardian Councils is an innovative program that recognises councils’ local environmental projects and encourages them to foster environmental stewardship,” he said.

“The program provides councils with a great opportunity to broaden current on-ground work and engage with local residents on how we all have a part to play in ensuring the Reef is healthy for future generations.

“With the Great Barrier Reef on their doorstep, it’s fantastic that Livingstone Shire Council has come on board as a Reef Guardian Council. We look forward to working closely with them in the future.”

Livingstone Shire Council was one of the first local governments to join Reef Guardians in 2007 — before it was subsumed by the council amalgamations into the Rockhampton Regional Council which continued its legacy of environmental actions such as tree planting.

Following de-amalgamation earlier this year, the Livingstone Shire Council is once again keen to show its environmental credentials and support for the Reef by re-joining this popular stewardship program.

Livingstone Shire Council Mayor Bill Ludwig said they were proud of their former involvement with the Reef Guardian Council Program and that they were one of the first Councils to sign onto this initiative.

“The new Livingstone Shire Council is therefore similarly proud to officially reinstate its partnership with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and once again become a Reef Guardian Council,” Mayor Ludwig said.

Between Bundaberg and Cooktown there are 13 Reef Guardian Councils, covering an area of 300,000 square kilometres and a population of almost 900,000 people.
