Brisbane schools working together for the health of the Reef

Students from Reef Guardian Schools across Brisbane are working together to help the local environment and health of the Queensland’s iconic Great Barrier Reef.

Five local schools are taking part in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority's 2013 Future Leaders Eco Challenge with students participating in environmental activities to learn new skills to help them look after their local ecosystems.

GBRMPA Reef Guardian Schools program manager, Megan Sperring, said students will learn how to think global but act local when it comes to protecting the health and resilience of the environment.

“This year’s theme, ‘The Amazing Great Barrier Reef – Let’s Keep it Great’, will serve to remind students how lucky we are to have a world-heritage listed icon right on our doorstep here in Queensland.

“On-ground sustainability projects in schools and in the community can help the Reef in a positive way and with the support of local environmental partners we are demonstrating that a practical, locally-based approach can make a real difference,” Ms Sperring said.

Students from Bulimba State School, Mansfield High, Mt Gravatt State High and Cleveland District State High School will travel to Nudgee Beach Environmental Education Centre to participate in activities including sustainable fishing and exploring the intertidal area.

“Nudgee Beach Environmental Centre is an active Reef Guardian School education hub with a wide variety of habitats including wetlands only a short walk away for students to explore.

“These types of habitats are also found in inshore areas of the Great Barrier Reef so students can learn about the actions they can take to protect their local inshore marine ecosystems and the health of the Great Barrier Reef,” Ms Sperring said.

Supporting this program are local partners Brisbane City Council, Ocean Life Education, Keep Queensland Beautiful, Reef Check, Australian Marine Environment Protection Association, Australian Youth Climate Coalition and the Global Learning Centre.

Reef Guardian Schools is an environmental education program run by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.
