Statement by Dr Russell Reichelt, Chairman of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority about the release of Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority governance review:
The Australian Government today released its report outlining governance recommendations to further strengthen the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.
It follows the government commissioning an independent review in March this year, led by independent reviewer, Dr Wendy Craik AM.
The review looked at the arrangements governing the Authority to determine whether current arrangements continue to be the best fit to the Authority’s work.
This review is timely and important considering the challenges faced by the Great Barrier Reef, including two consecutive years of coral bleaching.
While the Minister is reviewing the recommendations and considering next steps, the Minister asked that I extend my time with the Marine Park Authority to allow for new arrangements to be put in place.
I’ve accepted the Minister’s offer and will remain with the Marine Park Authority for up to one year.
I’m delighted to continue in the role during this transition period and look forward to working with our staff, our Board, partners and stakeholders to build the resilience of the Great Barrier Reef.
