The award-winning scientist, educator and communicator is a Professor of marine ecology and ecotoxicology at the University of New South Wales.

Federal Minister for the Environment Greg Hunt welcomed the appointment of Professor Emma Johnston to the board of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.

“Professor Johnston is a world class coastal marine researcher of the highest international calibre,” he said.

“She brings very strong scientific capability on many aspects of ecosystem health, conservation, and sustainable use of marine coastal regions.”

Minister Hunt thanked the retiring board member Mr Tony Mooney for his service to the Authority.

Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority Chairman Dr Russell Reichelt said Professor Johnston brought valuable expertise to the position.

“I look forward to Professor Johnston’s input into the policies and legislative matters concerning the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park,” he said.

Professor Johnston graduated with a BSc. (Hons) from the University of Melbourne in 1997 and a PhD from the University of Melbourne in 2002.

Professor Johnston investigates human impacts in marine ecosystems with a particular emphasis on stress ecology, invasion biology and the development of bio-monitoring tools.

From 2010-2014 she was an Australian Research Fellow for the Australian Research Council and in 2012 became the inaugural Director of the flagship Sydney Harbour Research Program for the Sydney Institute of Marine Science.

She is currently the lead author of the Federal Government’s State of Environment Report for the Australian Coast and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) at UNSW.

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority Chairman and board members are chosen by the Federal Minister for the Environment and are appointed by the Governor General. The board meets on average four times a year.
