Illegal fishers caught in night patrols

Published: 02/04/2015

Using the cover of darkness to fish illegally has failed to stop two Burdekin men from being caught and fined.

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) fined the two recreational fishers $1700 each for fishing in a green zone near Stanley Reef, offshore of Ayr.

Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol officers detected the vessel during a night patrol, finding the boat about 750 metres inside the no-take zone with its anchor lights turned off.

Inspection of the vessel found fishing equipment in use, along with freshly caught fish.

Night patrols are used regularly as part of multi-agency efforts to monitor compliance with zoning rules in the Marine Park.

Recreational fishers are reminded to use a zoning map and to cross-check them with a GPS to ensure they avoid fishing in green zones.
