The Great Barrier Reef Ministerial Council

The Great Barrier Reef Ministerial Council was established in 1979 to coordinate Commonwealth and Queensland Government policy for the management of the Great Barrier Reef.

The Great Barrier Reef Ministerial Council comprises two Ministers from each of the Commonwealth and Queensland Governments with responsibility for marine parks, science, tourism and/or the environment, and is chaired by the Commonwealth Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts.

The Great Barrier Reef Ministerial Council meets approximately once every year to discuss the broad strategic issues involved with managing the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and World Heritage Area. Such issues may include matters relating to fisheries.

Arrangements for the Great Barrier Reef Ministerial Council are currently being renewed as an outcome of the 2006 review of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act 1975.
