The establishment of regional offices in communities along the Great Barrier Reef is about enhancing the work that the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) is already doing by developing better linkages with, and greater understanding of, Great Barrier Reef coastal communities and enhancing local involvement in decision-making, compliance and stewardship of the Great Barrier Reef. The GBRMPA now has dedicated liaison staff based in Cairns, Townsville, Mackay and Rockhampton. The four offices cover the following regions respectively:

• Far Northern (Cape York to Cooktown and Daintree to Mission Beach)
• Northern (Tully to the Burdekin)
• Central (Bowen to St Lawrence)
• Southern (Stanage Bay to Bundaberg). 

The offices are managed by a Regional Liaison Manager assisted by a Senior Regional Liaison Officer and a Regional Liaison Officer, working as a team in their region.  In the Far Northern office, there are five officers with two specifically focusing on Cape York issues. These officers are expected to travel throughout their regions regularly and as such, may not always be physically in the office, however they will be contactable by telephone, email (format is firstname.lastname@gbrmpa.gov.au) or by making an appointment (see contact information below). 

Maps and other information continue to be available through the network of Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service offices and Community Access Points that have been established in partnership with bait and tackle shops, marine retailers and Visitor Information Centres along the Queensland coast.

Our primary roles

• To enhance communication between regional stakeholders and the main GBRMPA office in Townsville
• To strengthen relationships with our management partners; Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, the Environmental Protection Agency and other government agencies in the regions
• To provide support to the existing Local Marine Advisory Committees and other regional GBRMPA initiatives and activities based in the regions.
