Legislative requirements for the Outlook Report
Amendments to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act 1975 including the requirements for the Outlook Report came into effect on 1 July 2007.
Section 54 of the amended Act specifically to the Outlook Report and outlines what the report must contain.
The Act requires that an Outlook Report be prepared every five years with the initial report due to the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts by June 2009. The report must be peer-reviewed before it is given to the Minister. The Minister must table the final report in both Houses of the Australian Parliament.
Further amendments to the Act are expected to ensure that the legislation for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park is consistent with current Australian Government policies and approaches to environmental protection, as reflected in the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.
