The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority’s Reef HQ Aquarium has a number of casual employment opportunities for Visitor Services Officers (VSO). Successful applicants are appointed through a casual employment contract and may or may not be offered shifts. An ability to work in more than one VSO area is desirable but not essential.

A. VSO - SCUBA Divers

Reef HQ Aquarium is the world's largest living coral reef aquarium. The Living Systems Team requires casual divers/aquarists to assist with diving duties. A copy of relevant qualifications, licenses and certificates are to be supplied on submitting your application. Highly suitable applicants would have:

  • SCUBA diving certification (must have a minimum dive qualification of Divemaster or ADAS)
  • A current Occupational Diving Medical (AS2299.1)
  • A current nationally recognised First Aid Statement of Attainment, and a current CPR and Oxygen Administration Statement of Attainment

Reef HQ Aquarium is the National Education Centre for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. Reef education programs are facilitated to students at all stages of learning. Casual education staff may work across a number of areas including assisting with the delivery of reef education programs for visiting school groups during the day, facilitating reef sleepovers at night and running children’s school holiday programs. Some casual education staff also work as tour guides delivering the daily program of talks and tours at Reef HQ Aquarium. Casual education staff who also possess the relevant scuba diver qualifications may also undertake diving duties to support Reef HQ Aquarium’s reef videoconferencing program.

Highly suitable applicants would:

  • Have well-developed communication skills, including the ability to present talks and tours or education programs to groups of people of all ages from children to adults.
  • Have a very good understanding of the marine environment.
  • Hold or be willing to apply for a "Blue Card" issued by the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian and indicates that a person is eligible to work with children and young people in Queensland.
  • A current Senior First Aid Certificate, including current CPR and Oxygen Administration training.
  • Be flexible with working hours that may include working weekdays, weekends, during the daytime, evenings or overnight when required.
  • Possess Scuba diving qualifications (desirable but not essential).  Scuba divers must have a minimum dive qualification of Divemaster or ADAS Aquarium Diver.

C. VSO – Trades (Capital Works Assistant)

A Capital Works Assistant provides operational support within medium to large scale capital works projects at ReefHQ Great Barrier Reef Aquarium. They will be actively engaged in multiple components of capital works projects (including but not limited to demolition, site preparation, non-commercial plumbing, assisting with deliveries, simple carpentry, general maintenance and clean-up).  Highly suitable applicants would:

  • Have trade qualifications in construction and/or relevant industry experience.
  • Hold a "White Card" (General Construction Induction).
  • Current unrestricted manual driver’s license (preferred).

D. VSO - Aquarist

Reef HQ requires casual aquarists that are not necessarily divers. These positions are not full time and may involve working on any day (to permit backfilling of absent aquarists) with intermittent blocks of full time employment subject to availability and competency. Highly suitable applicants would have:

  • Flexibility regarding working hours. Ability to work weekends and at times during the week is a must. Ongoing training will be provided during the week to equip working on weekends.
  • A genuine passion for working with marine animals.
  • Demonstrated experience with marine aquarium systems (this may include extensive systems at home or professionally, specimen breeding, disease control or keeping species that are more challenging).
  • An understanding of water quality, maintenance and filtration, including a familiarity with a variety of life support systems.
  • The ability to work autonomously with a proven work ethic, excellent communication skills, and ability to multitask under pressure.
