Overview

The Marine Park Authority Board (MPA) convened on Thursday 28 June 2018. Members discussed the Positon Statements for Climate Change, Marine Debris and Coastal Ecosystems; met with the Managing Director of the Great Barrier Reef Foundation (GBRF) and welcomed the opportunity to discuss the GBRF principles and approaches for working in partnership; discussed the increase in Traditional Owner engagement and the challenges in engaging with over 70 Traditional Owner groups and will seek to overlap a Board meeting with an Indigenous Reef Advisory Committee meeting; welcomed the update provided by the Tourism Reef Advisory Committee and the approach taken in recent engagement.

Approval of Position Statement for targeted public comment - Climate Change and Marine Debris and approve changes to the Coastal Ecosystems Position Statement

Decision MPA 250 (2018-250-10 on 28/06/2018): The Authority:

  • APPROVED draft Climate Change position statement for targeted consultation with key stakeholders in July.
  • NOTED the Marine Debris position statement is undergoing targeted expert consultation to inform the final draft for approval by the Marine Park Authority Board at MPA 251.
  • NOTED the revised format for position statements that provides a succinct statement with key contextual information in an easy-to-read format.
  • REVOKED all previous proformas, formats and templates for Position Statements as approved in MPA 2000-181-4(c)(iv) and MPA 2010-215-10 2(c).
  • NOTED the previously approved Coastal Ecosystems position statement has been reformatted to align with the revised format and is planned for release in July 2018.
  • NOTED communication, engagement and implementation approaches for each position statement are being developed and an update will be provided to the Marine Park Authority Board for consideration along with the final position statements at MPA 251.

Indigenous Reef Advisory Committee Update

Decision MPA 250 (2018-250-19 on 28/06/2018): The Authority:

  • NOTED the update provided by Kirstin Dobbs, Acting General Manager, Reef Protection, Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority regarding the Indigenous Reef Advisory Committee (IRAC).
  • DISCUSSED the increase in Traditional Owner engagement and the challenges in engaging with over 70 Traditional Owner groups and will be seeking to overlap a Board meeting with an IRAC.

Tourism Reef Advisory Committee Update

Decision MPA 250 (2018-250-20 on 13/03/2018): The Authority:

  • NOTED the update provided relating to the Tourism Reef Advisory Committee and welcomed the approach taken in the recent engagement.
  • CONFIRMED there is no objection to publication of the information.
