25 June 2019 –Townsville

Overview

The Marine Park Authority Board (MPA) convened on Tuesday, 25 June 2019 in Townsville and provided the Board members with an opportunity to meet with the recently appointed Minister for the Environment, The Hon Susssan Ley MP.  The Marine Park Authority Board 255 was preceded by a roundtable discussion and stakeholder event with representatives from the Cairns and surrounding Regions.  At the Marine Park Authority Board 255 members discussed the progress of implementing recommendations from the Craik Governance Review which included the approval of the Board Charter and Board Calendar.  The Marine Park Authority Board also discussed general projects and business for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) including the Climate Change Position Statement, Reef Advisory Committee Report and considered recommendations provided by those Committees.  The Marine Park Authority Board discussed the Reef Health Narrative currently being developed by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority as well as a being provided with an overview on Reef HQ Aquarium, Master Reef Guides, Joint Field Management Program and Reef 2050 Integrated Monitoring and Reporting Program.

Climate Change Position Statement

Decision Marine Park Authority Board 255 (2019-255-04 on 25/06/2019): The Authority:

  • APPROVED the Climate Change Position Statement (subject to updates being made).
  • NOTED the consultation report.
  • DISCUSSED the implementation approach, with implementation plan to be circulated.
  • CONFIRMED there is no objection to publication of the information.

Reef Advisory Committee Reports

Decision Marine Park Authority Board 255 (2019-255-06 on 25/06/2019): The Authority:

  • NOTED the progress of implementation of recommendations from the Craik Governance review.
  • APPROVED the Board Charter, subject to above changes.
  • APPROVED the Board Calendar and the approach to updating the calendar as needed.
  • NOTED the update on the development of the Board Procedures Manual, which will be provided for consideration at Marine Park Authority Board 256.
  • ADVISED on the proposed meeting calendar considering the meeting themes, meeting length / timing and additional Board activities.
  • CONFIRMED there is no objection to publication of the information.

Executive Report

  • NOTED the previous Corporate Report content is now included in a capability section of the Executive Report to reflect the current Corporate Plan structure and create a more streamlined reporting product.
  • CONFIRMED there is no objection to publication of the information.
