Overview

The Marine Park Authority Board (MPA) convened on Friday, 10 May 2019 in Airlie Beach. MPA 254 was preceded by a roundtable discussion and stakeholder event with representatives from the Whitsunday Region Reef Community.  At MPA 254 members discussed the progress of implementing recommendations from the Craik Governance Review and the general projects and business for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) including the continued listing of scalloped hammerhead sharks, Terms of Reference for Indigenous Reef Advisory Committee and Tourism Reef Advisory Committee, announcement of grants during caretaker period, progress with Reef 2050 Plan, the Joint Field Management Program, communications reporting, Reef HQ Aquarium, and partnerships for field data collection.

Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority Governance

Decision MPA 254 (2019-254-02 on 10/05/2019): The Authority:

  • NOTED the progress of implementation of recommendations from the Craik Governance review (Attachment A).
  • DISCUSSED the Board Charter (Attachment B)
  • DISCUSSED the Board Skills Matrix (Attachment C) and potential skill gaps to inform recruitment of new board members.
  • NOTED a self-assessment tool will be provided for consideration at MPA 256.
  • COMMENTED on the proposed meeting themes (Attachment D) to inform strategic planning and agenda development for upcoming meetings but noted the need to complete a Board Calendar and to finalise the rolling two year forward plan (Attachment D).
  • CONFIRMED there is no objection to publication of the information.

Executive Report

Decision MPA 254 (2019-254-07 on 10/05/2019): The Authority:

  • NOTED the MPA 254 Executive Report (Attachment A).
  • NOTED the previous Corporate Report content is now included in a capability section of the Executive Report to reflect the current Corporate Plan structure and create a more streamlined reporting product.
  • CONFIRMED there is no objection to publication of the information.
