How to make a Public Interest Disclosure (PID)

Please see the below information which the Public Interest Disclosure should identify. Disclosures under the Public Interest Disclosure Act must be made to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority's Authorised Officer.

The Public Interest Disclosure should identify the incident or issue of concern in sufficient detail to enable an appropriate investigation to be conducted. Depending on the circumstances, disclosures should supply:

  • The name and contact details of the discloser (desirable);
  • The nature of the alleged wrongdoings;
  • Who they think was responsible for the alleged wrongdoing (if possible);
  • When and where the alleged wrongdoing occurred;
  • Events surrounding the issue;
  • Whether they did anything in response to the alleged wrongdoing; and
  • Others who know about the alleged wrongdoing and have allowed it to continue.

Before making a disclosure, you should contact the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority to find out more about:

  • Any queries you have regarding the lodgement of a disclosure;
  • Your rights and responsibilities under the Public Interest Disclosure Act;
  • The protections that will apply under the Public Interest Disclosure Act;
  • Whether the information you have is covered by the Public Interest Disclosure Act.

If your information is not covered by the Public Interest Disclosure Act you can still make your disclosure to the public authority concerned using its complaint management process (if you are a member of the public) or its grievance process (if you are or were an employee at the time the incident occurred). Once you have been informed about the Public Interest Disclosure Act and your rights and responsibilities, you must make it clear you have chosen to make your disclosure under the Public Interest Disclosure Act.

If you choose to make your disclosure under the Public Interest Disclosure Act you must ensure you do not discuss the matter with anyone other than the Authorised Officer, otherwise you could lose immunity under the Public Interest Disclosure Act.
