Annual Report 2010-11

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority’s 2010–11 annual report outlines our work and achievements as we work towards the goal of long-term protection, ecologically sustainable use, understanding and enjoyment of the Great Barrier Reef for all Australians and the international community, through the care and development of the Marine Park.

In 2010–11, we worked towards this outcome by focusing on the following three objectives:

  1. Addressing key risks affecting the outlook for the Great Barrier Reef
  2. Ensuring that management delivers ecologically sustainable use of the Great Barrier Reef
  3. Maintaining a high performing, effective and efficient organisation.

A key focus during this reporting period was implementing an extreme weather response program, following the major flooding caused by category 5 cyclone Yasi. We completed rapid assessments of the cyclone’s impact on reefs in the weeks following the cyclone. We also conducted extra water quality sampling and seagrass health monitoring, which revealed declining seagrass and new information on flood plumes.
