Public consultation on the Draft Great Barrier Reef Interventions Policy

Policy Overview

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (the Authority) has released the draft Great Barrier Reef Interventions Policy (the policy) for public comment and we welcome your views.

The draft policy has been developed to align with the Authority’s Great Barrier Reef Blueprint for Resilience 2017 and will guide all interventions in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park ensuring they are designed to build and support the resilience of the Reef system and to provide conservation benefits now and in the future. In turn, this will help protect the cultural, social and economic values of the Reef.

The Reef is changing and interventions for conservation gain can potentially contribute to its future by building resilience and maintaining key functions, habitats and species. The Authority acknowledges that restoration efforts do not negate the need to address the serious threats from climate change to the Reef and must also be supported by continued, strong foundational management.

The policy will enable decisions about appropriate restoration and adaptation activities designed to provide a benefit to the Reef while ensuring such activities do not have a disproportionate adverse impact on the ecological, biodiversity, heritage, social or economic values of the Marine Park.

It will provide direction for the assessment, development and implementation of all intervention actions across all scales, from local sites to reef-wide initiatives and those being undertaken by proponents, managing agencies, Traditional Owners, researchers and reef industries. It will also inform other users of the Marine Park and the general public about how decisions are made about these actions.
